The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is an adventurer’s safari paradise in Southern California. The 1,800-acre Safari Park is home to more than 3,000 animals representing more than 375 species—many living in wide, open field enclosures. So jump onto one of our thrilling array of tours and create memories of adventure for you and your family – all while benefiting the conservation of species here and in more than 35 countries across the globe.

I know this is the closest my family will get to have this amazing experience.
With a family of 6, we are just simply not able to travel to Africa and yet I would like my children to grow up experiencing wildlife and its conservation. San Diego Zoo Safari Park provides us with this amazing opportunity just hours away from our own backyard. The park is located just 30 miles north of downtown San Diego in the San Pasqual Valley.
Last month, I got a chance to see some of these amazing animals up close on their multi-city tour.
I also got a chance to speak with Rick Schwartz, Elephant Odyssey Ambassador, and he explained to me all the dfferent types of excursions that they offer for your family. All of these sound amazing, check them out:

The Africa Tram takes guests around the Park’s field exhibits full of herds of giraffes, crashes of rhinos and flocks of exotic birds on an open-air, soft-wheeled vehicle inspired by the legendary safari trains of Africa. The experience brings visitors to eye level with animals such as Cape buffalo, Grant’s gazelles, African crowned cranes and more. The tour vehicles run on biodiesel and travel 2.5 miles around the Park’s expansive African field enclosures totaling 213 acres.

Flightline Safari, a zip-line adventure, allows guests to soar like a condor over the Park. Riders enjoy a short fledgling flight before taking a safari vehicle to the top of a hill overlooking the San Pasqual Valley. From there, riders soar more than 2/3 of a mile over the Asian and African field exhibits full of exotic animals including giraffes and rhinos. Riders must be at least 10 years old and weigh between 75 and 250 pounds.

Rolling Safari is an off-road experience for guests who want to explore the Park on a Segway X2, a two-wheeled electric personal transporter designed specifically to take the road less traveled. Adventurers have an opportunity to roll past herds of African and Asian animals.

Caravan Safari offer guests an adventure inside the Safari Park’s field habitats in open-air trucks. Take a photo of a loved one feeding a giraffe or watch the mating rituals of exotic deer and sheep. This adventure allows you to get so close you can actually feel the breath of a rhino. Your tour guide will explain the interesting, natural behaviors of the Cape buffalo, wildebeest, and even East African crowned cranes hanging out in the huge fields. For ages 6 to adult.

Roar & Snore Safari is an overnight tent-camping experience that overlooks the plains of "East Africa"—the Safari Park’s largest field exhibit—inhabited by giraffes, rhinos, antelope and more. Campers enjoy walking tours, a campfire program, meals, listening to animal sounds and up-close animal encounters.
 How cool is that?

Rick also talked about some of the dozens of amazing conservation efforts that the park is involved in. To read more visit their site here for conservation. You can even donate online.

To get your kids excited about the animals and your trip visit their kids section online here, they even have a Safari Park Adventure game online. Really cool. My kids were ga ga over it and can't stop talking about the animals. Also check out their Elephant cam when you are not at the park!

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park also has Summer Camps for Animal-Loving Kids, to read more about these camps visit their site here.

From July 2 - August 21, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will host an African Extravaganza. You will be able to experience a whole continent worth of excitement! There are tons of activities lined up on these days. What a special time to visit.
