The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature Film Review - A Little Too Nutty

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature is the sequel to the film, The Nut Job. Yes, there was a previous film. Call me nutty, but of all the films that could use sequel, this one never crossed my mind. And yet, in what is a very rare instance, The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature is actually better than the first. Yes, this film is better than the first one. Yes, you read that right. Now, that doesn't mean it is actually good.

The story begins where the first film left off, continuing the story of the squad of park animals who must find a new food source when their beloved nut shop burns down. One of the biggest challenges for me with the film was the off pudding violence in the film. I just found it not as cute and in part disturbing. The mayor and his daughter are cruel to animals and almost sadistic.

The film also fell flat with its jokes, especially among adults. We've seen animated films successfully entertain adults with clever and witty dialogue, so it is disappointing to sit through one that fails to bring in the parents that are spending their hard earned money to take the kids to the movie.

And with their star-studded voice cast, it doesn't add to it. As a parent, Sully, voiced by Will Arnett, just sounded like his LEGO Batman character. Which in my house is very popular. It just didn't seem to match anymore.

As for the kids, they will like it. Let's face it, there bar is much lower and they are easy to please. And among mainstream moviegoers, I would predict that slightly over half will think it was a "cute film", well you may not want to say "cute" after....or Jackie Chan might take issue with that adjective.
